TTCA continues to partner with Government entities to build capacity in the Local Construction Sector

On Saturday 28 January, 2023, the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (MoRDLG) and the Secondary Roads Rehabilitation and Improvement Company Limited (SRRIC) in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Contractors Association (TTCA) hosted a one day Road Repair Seminar at the Daaga Hall, UWI, St. Augustine Campus.

Technical presentations were made through the TTCA by 3 Civil Engineers:

  1. Mr. Varun Singh presented on Road Repairs and Asphalt Best Practice. Mr. Singh emphasized the importance of identifying the root cause of failure of asphalt pavements and selecting the most appropriate road rehabilitation methodology.
  2. Mr. Austin Rodriguez presented on Concrete Best Practice for Drainage Structures and he incorporated relevant aspects of Concrete Technology specific to Boxdrain Construction, ensuring that safety was always in focus.
  3. Mrs. Lisa Ramoutar addressed the topic of Quality by using Standards for Road Materials, highlighting the impacts of materials not meeting specifications on both cost and performance of the final construction.

The Honorable Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Faris Al-Rawi provided an overview of his vision for transforming the Ministry and positively impacting the condition of our road network, a significant portion of which (≈ 80 %) falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government and the newly formed SRRIC.

The seminar targeted Micro, Small and New Contractors and was the brainchild of SRRIC CEO Mr. Antonio Ross. With NEDCO present on the day, participants had the opportunity to explore and enquire about options for financing and funding along with guidance on business start-up and registration. With over 400 attendees on the day, the hall was almost filled with people either hoping to learn, get a technical refresher or people looking for an opportunity for work under the Ministry and SRRIC.   Mr. Ross closed by indicating to all participants that the seminar was only the start of a larger programme that would see other sessions being held in other parts of the country. He thanked all participants for attending and shared a vision that they would grow through the programme with support from the organizations MoRDLG and SRRIC.
